Audubon Society Birds of America

BIRDS OF AMERICA

I was at the library in the research area and picked up "Audubon Birds of America" with introduction and commentaries by Roger Tory Peterson. I love art and education and found this especially interesting.  The Snowy Egret it stated has become the proudest symbol of the National Audubon Society. Because of their plumes they were sought out and destroyed -so the Audubon Society fought for plummage laws.  The first Audubon warden in South Florida, Guy Bradley was shot by feather hunters (probably for hats) near Cape Sable in 1905.  The excerpt read that a marker stands where his body washed ashore reads "Faithful unto death."

The oil paintings are exquiste  of the many birds in this wonderful book.  I wonder how many people today would go to such lengths to ensure conservation of our wildlife?  Some would stuff such a bird and put it on their wall for self endulgance or like they did in 1905 shoot the bird for its feathers or plummage as it is called.  See photo.

Thanks to all who work to educate our children about the worth in the circle of life.
